Fishing with Yanna in Live Bait
Yanna is Coen’s sister, nearly grown up, and the one who minds Lunka and Mirto when Pieter and Coen are away. Live Bait begins when Pieter sends her and the younger children to catch trout; the journal notes that she hates baiting hooks, which is Coen’s cue to join them.
The trip has several small steps: find the rods Pieter hid in the reeds, set them up because the younger two will not hold them for long, bait the hooks, then play a game of tag with Lunka, Mirto and Yanna. Afterwards Coen talks with Yanna about what to do next.
The outing ends with Brencis’s men confronting the siblings, and Coen has to defend them. It could have ended badly if not for the uriash leading the soldiers, and Coen is left surprised, having taken the uriashi for mindless beasts. Later, Lunka’s letter to Coen names Yanna among the family members she will tell that he is alive.
