Lore and setting

World Guide: Vale Sangora and Beyond

A lore-focused guide to the setting, factions and places that define Vale Sangora.

The setting

An alternate 14th-century Europe

The Blood of Dawnwalker is set in a dark-fantasy version of 14th-century Europe. War and the Black Death have damaged trade, authority and community life, leaving ordinary settlements vulnerable when supernatural powers begin to move openly.

This is not a medieval backdrop used only for atmosphere. Scarce resources, broken roads and isolated communities shape how information travels and where Coen can find help. The setting makes every village, pass and ruined stronghold part of the wider conflict.

Hand-built regions

Forests, plains, swamps, mountains, villages and ruins form one connected open world.

Day and night matter

The cycle changes which side of Coen's nature is strongest and safest to use.

Isolation is a system

Vale Sangora's separation from the outside world affects alliances, travel and the flow of news.

Vale Sangora

A valley sealed behind the mountains

Vale Sangora is the central region of the story, a secluded territory whose villages and wilderness are now caught under vampire rule. Brencis has cut the valley off from the outside world after the vrakhiri takeover, so residents cannot rely on outside armies or distant authorities to restore order.

The valley's geography creates natural contrasts: cultivated hillsides sit close to dangerous roads, old settlements give way to wetlands and forests, and mountain routes connect places that may no longer share the same loyalties. These contrasts give the open world its narrative texture as well as its exploration routes.

Power and survival

Forces shaping the valley

Human communities

Villages and families are trying to preserve ordinary life while war, disease and the vampire takeover reduce their options. Their needs give Coen reasons to travel beyond the safest roads.

The vrakhiri

The vampire power that has taken control of Vale Sangora is not simply a collection of individual enemies. Its rule changes who controls territory, who can move safely and which old institutions still matter.

Coen, the Dawnwalker

Coen belongs fully to neither side. His human and vampire forms let him approach the same world in different ways, but both identities carry costs and consequences.
