Renna’s mill and the hunt for Mert
Renna and her husband Mert run the water mill near Laslea. The plague killed both of their children, and since Brencis’s soldiers took Mert away for helping the manumits she has been keeping the mill going by herself.
Their mill is where Coen picks up Mert’s trail. When he first arrives, soldiers may be watching the place; the journal suggests coming back by day or driving them off, then finding out where Mert was taken. The soldiers’ orders call for Mert to be moved to Stoneward Post and for his wife to be made to cooperate, and a half-burnt letter from Mert to his cousin shows that he wanted to keep Renna out of his dealings with the rebels.
To help Renna, help Mert. Under Watchful Eyes covers his rescue from Stoneward Post, and the Wedding Ring, described as a symbol of Mert’s devotion to his wife, is one of the items connected with compelling his soul.
