Getting Mert out of Stoneward Post
Mert runs a mill near Laslea with his wife Renna and quietly helps the manumits. A soldier’s arrest report and the commander’s orders confirm that he was taken to Stoneward Post for interrogation. Earlier notes show why: one tells a hunted manumit to hide with Mert the miller, and another, from Mert to Vlad, warns that he thinks he is being watched.
The search begins at the mill. Soldiers may be there at night, so come back by day or deal with them. At Stoneward Post the guard at the gate takes Coen’s weapons, so collect them before you leave. A prisoner’s wife mentions a blanket she left for her husband that turned up among merchant Yenno’s goods. Follow that lead to expose the overseer selling prisoners’ belongings, report it to the commander, and you are allowed in to see Mert.
Mert tells Coen that Sara is the manumits’ contact and describes the rendezvous: cross the bridge near Stoneward Post, then head southeast, which leads into Shadows in the Woods. To free him in Under Watchful Eyes, get the cell key from the overseer and escort him out. The journal records three outcomes: Mert escapes but is too injured and frightened to rejoin the manumits, he dies, or the rescue is left unfinished.
