Take the keys after talking with Mert
Complete the conversation with Mert in the dungeon during The Firebrand. Under Watchful Eyes begins from this surviving-prisoner route. When you climb the stairs afterward, Friedo has his back turned, giving you an opportunity to take the keys.
Return to the cell and prepare before unlocking it: any surviving guard in the room becomes hostile when you free Mert. If you surrendered your weapons on the way into the post, the room’s back-right corner contains a Weathered Longsword. Taking that sword also provokes the guard, so equip it promptly.
The same key opens the short way out
On the north side of the overseer’s tower, look for a lit alcove. Its locked door accepts the Prison Keychain. Beyond it, a second door uses the same key and leads outside the walls.
This route completes Mert’s escape objective even though the journal names Stoneward Post’s main gate. It avoids escorting him back through most of the compound. The rescue concerns the living Mert; a later corpse investigation is a different route.
