Use the dagger with the corpse before opening the chest
Fight through the excavation and defeat the witch in the final chamber. Use Focus to locate the Ritual Dagger on the room’s left side and pick it up. The locked chest and the corpse in front of it are in the same room.
Return to human form during the day and use Compel Soul on that corpse with the Ritual Dagger in your inventory. Present the dagger in the conversation, then interact with the chest to collect Ancient Footwear. Possessing the dagger is only part of the sequence: the soul conversation supplies the opening step.
If you clear the ruins at night, return during the day for the conversation. The activity marker disappears after the witch is defeated, so use Xanthe’s banner and the small opening in the hillside to find the entrance again.
