Font of Life and Mandrake Ward come from choices in Anca’s and Lacra’s questlines. They grant different kinds of recovery: human regeneration outside combat, or protection from a fatal blow at night. You receive the perk through its quest reward, so searching for a normal skill manual will not unlock it.
This guide discusses the reward choices in Stronger Than Achilles and The Night of Horrors.
Choose Coen at the Font of Life
Follow Anca’s questline through Where Old Devils Lie to Stronger Than Achilles. When you reach the Font, choose to let Coen drink what remains. That choice grants Font of Life, which passively regenerates human health outside combat.
The perk can regenerate toward a full human health bar. Its listed 100% describes the recovery ceiling; it does not mean that your whole bar returns instantly or every second. The effect applies to the human form, so it does not replace blood recovery at night.
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Coen uses the Font | Coen receives Font of Life and its out-of-combat human regeneration. |
| Anca uses the Font | Coen does not receive this perk. Anca has a conditional shop selection tied to her using the Font; the items available can vary. |
| Destroy the Font | The alternative equipment reward is Ancient Greaves, a pair of heavy trousers. |
Compare the regeneration with the armour’s bonuses before making this choice. The perk is tied to this story decision; a later skill point or a purchased Witchcraft manual does not substitute for it.
Accept the mandrake in The Night of Horrors
Continue Lacra’s questline through Our Rotten Roots to The Night of Horrors. Near the end, in the hidden cave, Lacra offers Coen the mandrake. Accepting and consuming it grants Mandrake Ward.
When Coen takes fatal damage in vampire form, the perk restores three health segments, once per night. This is a recovery trigger with a nightly limit. It does not refill after every encounter and it does not increase the maximum number of segments in your Blood Reserve.
The mandrake decision comes before the later romance dialogue with Lacra. The mandrake reward and the subsequent blood-drinking opportunity associated with Mesmerise are separate outcomes. Keep the perk choice separate when deciding how to continue that conversation.
After Mandrake Ward has triggered, replenish your reserve with a blood restorative or a suitable feeding target before the next fight. A larger reserve from Endless Hunger is a separate benefit.
Match the perk to the kind of recovery you need
| Effect | When it helps | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Font of Life | Human health regeneration between fights. | Outside combat, in human form. |
| Mandrake Ward | A fatal hit restores three vampiric health segments. | Once per night. |
| Renounce Death | A fatal moment grants 10 seconds of immortality and attack lifesteal. | Once per combat; it is a Vampirism Ultimate choice. |
| Closing Wounds | Gradual regeneration within the current vampire health segment. | Stops at that segment’s upper boundary. |
The two quest perks are awarded through their story choices. They do not need a book from a skill teacher. Use the skill calculator for the ordinary ranks you still plan to buy, and account for your quest rewards when deciding which recovery skills you need.
