Match the recovery method to the missing health
At night, Coen’s health is a segmented Blood Reserve. Voracious Bite and blood restoratives replenish it, while recovery perks have their own limits. A skill that refills the current segment may stop even though the whole bar is not full.
| What you see | What can help | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| An incomplete current segment | Closing Wounds regenerates within that segment. | The skill’s ceiling is the current segment, even if other segments are missing. |
| Grey, recently lost health | Blood Theft restores recently lost health when you attack. | Counterattack while its recovery window is still open. |
| Blood Reserve still missing after regeneration stops | Feed on a suitable target or use a blood restorative. | A blood vial remains useful when enemies cannot be bitten. |
| Only one segment remains before a conversation | Replenish your Blood Reserve before approaching the person. | Blood Craving can cause Coen to lose control during dialogue. |
Keep capacity, restoration and regeneration separate when comparing equipment. More maximum vampiric health gives you a larger reserve; a blood-drinking bonus improves feeding; segment regeneration provides gradual recovery within its limit. The equipment comparison can help you compare those effects alongside damage and defence.
Collector’s Pendant reduces vampiric ability health cost and adds claw damage. Arbiter’s Ring combines lower ability health cost with vampiric restoration and regeneration bonuses, while Vrakhir’s Treads support blood drinking and vampiric restoration.
Feed before Blood Craving affects a conversation
The game’s Blood Craving tutorial places the danger threshold at one remaining vampiric health segment. In this state, Coen can lose control while talking and drain the person in front of him, including someone friendly. Before visiting a merchant or speaking to a quest character at night, check the reserve and use a restorative if necessary.
In combat, Voracious Bite spends an Activation Charge to feed on a suitable enemy. Outside combat, enter Focus, select an available feeding target and follow the bite prompt. The non-combat feeding interaction can be interrupted by an opponent’s attack, so deal with nearby threats before relying on it.
Feeding on deer and rabbits also adds Corruption progress. Choosing an animal for recovery still contributes toward your next Corruption level.
Target suitability matters. GameSpot’s healing guide identifies large creatures such as bears and spectral creatures without blood as targets you cannot use for this recovery. A fight against one of them is a reason to prepare blood vials beforehand. Nourishing Blood can improve restoration when you do have a target to feed on.
Feeding input and post-drinking dialogue
Hold the feeding input for up to four seconds. After blood drinking, the matching creature dialogue has a 90-second cooldown before it can trigger again.
The animal group used by that dialogue rule lists Bear, Pig, Cat, Rabbit, Boar, Chicken, Dog, Wolf, Horse, Cow, Deer, Rooster and Mallard. Human and Uriash, plus Rat, Muron, Kobold and Kobold Mutant, follow separate dialogue rules; they are not additional entries in the animal list.
Put a blood restorative in a quickslot before combat
Blood items can be used directly as well as kept for crafting. Vial of Animal Blood and Vial of Human Blood offer portable feeding, and the healing guide also identifies Tainted Marrow, Kobold’s Blood and Murohn Blood as restoratives.
- Before entering combat, assign the blood item you intend to use to a quickslot.
- Check how many you have left, especially if you have just crafted an infusion from the same ingredient.
- Use the assigned quickslot when you need recovery without a feeding target.
Story difficulty has an inventory exception. The Blood Drinking tutorial allows drinking directly from the inventory during combat on Story difficulty. On other difficulties, prepare the quickslot beforehand.
These blood items also list increased Corruption. That progression requirement is separate from the health they restore: the Corruption guide lists all 15 level thresholds and explains when an earned level advances. Flower of Anachora Ivy likewise lists instant health restoration and increased Corruption.
Choose between regeneration, counterattacks and better feeding
The same recovery plan does not suit every fight. A cautious character may favour regeneration between exchanges; an aggressive one can recover recently lost health through counterattacks. The skill pages show every rank and its requirements.
| Skill | Role in recovery | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Endless Hunger | Three, four or five maximum health segments at the selected rank. | Those are total capacities, not three bonuses to add together. This is the prerequisite for Closing Wounds. |
| Closing Wounds | Regenerates 2% or 4% of a health segment per second. | Recovery stays within the current segment. Rank 1 requires Corruption 3. |
| Blood Theft | Attacks restore recently lost vampiric health. | Requires Closing Wounds and an open recovery window. Rank 2 extends that window. |
| Nourishing Blood | Improves blood-drinking restoration by 10%, 20% or 40%. | A feeding bonus is different from passive regeneration or a larger reserve. |
| Scarlet Shield | Restores health after blocks, with different effects for Perfect, Directional and Omni Blocks. | It must be equipped in the Active Abilities panel. Ordinary blocks use a trigger chance. |
| Renounce Death | Grants 10 seconds of immortality and attack lifesteal instead of dying, once per combat. | It is an Ultimate choice requiring Corruption 15, four skill points and two time segments. |
For example, reaching Closing Wounds rank 1 from neither it nor Endless Hunger means budgeting for both skills: two skill points and two time segments, plus Corruption 3 for Closing Wounds. If you already learned Endless Hunger, only the new Closing Wounds rank remains to be purchased. Use the skill calculator to include prerequisites and record learned ranks.
Voracious Bite’s own ranks list 60%, 80%, 100% and 120% of a health segment restored. A value of 100% means one segment, not every segment in your health bar. Compare that upgrade with a feeding bonus before spending the next skill point.
Keep enough blood ingredients for the infusions you want
For an additional safeguard, Mandrake Ward is a quest perk that restores three segments after fatal damage, once per night. Its nightly limit is separate from Renounce Death’s once-per-combat trigger.
Three craftable infusions explicitly replenish Blood Reserve. Their descriptions distinguish a small part, a part and a large part of the reserve. Each also increases Corruption. Learn the corresponding recipe and prepare these quantities for one craft:
| Infusion | Ingredients | Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Animal Blood Infusion | 1 Vial of Animal Blood, 2 Ribwort Plantain, 2 Yellow Sweet Clover. | Animal Blood Infusion recipe |
| Mortal’s Blood Infusion | 1 Vial of Human Blood, 2 Yellow Sweet Clover, 2 Perilla. | Mortal’s Blood Infusion recipe |
| Supernatural’s Blood Infusion | 1 Tainted Marrow, 3 Perilla, 1 Tansy. | Supernatural’s Blood Infusion recipe |
For one of each infusion, the shared herb totals are four Yellow Sweet Clover and five Perilla, alongside two Ribwort Plantain and one Tansy. You also need one of each blood base. My journey can combine material requirements for the quantities you choose. A vial spent on crafting is no longer available for direct use.
For permanent progression, Razkovniche Elixir serves a different purpose: its description grants increased Health and a skill point. Its recipe uses one Strong Ancient Reagent, two Tatzelwurm Glands and one Razkovniche Plant. Keep that preparation separate from the blood restoratives you pack for an immediate fight.
Use the crafting and alchemy guide to look up other preparations by effect or ingredient. For planning shrine visits and skill learning, see how time segments work.
