Klaus’s choices share the same immediate reward
Klaus the Brave is the man hiding in a barrel during Ambrus’s Transports: Roadside Surprise. Encouraging him, telling him to stop or killing him gives the same immediate completion reward: one Kobold’s Blood, one skill point and experience. The later accounts of Klaus differ.
Find Klaus in a barrel at the blood shipment
Roadside Surprise is one of Ambrus’s Blood Transport activities in Briar Sloughs. Open its map location, defeat the guards and use Focus to find the highlighted barrels.
Interact with the shipment to discover Klaus hiding inside one of the barrels. He says he is trying to infiltrate Ambrus’s blood cellars and hopes Crake will let him join the manumits. Choose “You’re insane.” to reach the conversation about whether he should continue.
This activity contributes to the Court struggle against Ambrus. The Infamy and Court Anger guide explains where Blood Transports fit among his activities.
Should Klaus the Brave drop the act?
Choose the response that fits how you want Coen to treat him. Encouragement and discouragement change the conversation and later accounts of Klaus, while the immediate completion reward is shared.
| Dialogue choice | What Coen does |
|---|---|
| “You better drop this act while you still can.” | Coen tries to dissuade Klaus from pursuing his plan. |
| “Keep on fighting, then. Crake will notice, eventually.” | Coen encourages Klaus to keep trying to join the manumits. |
| “[give in to the hunger]” | At night, Coen can drain Klaus, killing him and increasing Corruption. |
The hunger option is a lethal nighttime choice. If you want Klaus to leave the encounter alive, finish the conversation by encouraging or dissuading him.
The same immediate reward for the three outcomes
Completing the encounter by encouraging Klaus, discouraging him or killing him awards Kobold’s Blood × 1, 1 skill point and experience. You do not need to encourage him to obtain the blood.
Kobold’s Blood has its own item effects. Open its entry before using it, and use the skill calculator if you want to plan where the additional point goes.
Read the later accounts of Klaus
After encouraging Klaus, look for Report on New Recruits in Crake’s office at the Manumit Hideout in Svartrau. Its account continues the recruitment story beyond the roadside conversation.
Show what the later reports say
Report on New Recruits says the manumits considered Klaus unfit to join. He tried to prove his skill with a shoulder roll while holding a drawn sword and seriously injured himself. The report does not describe a successful recruitment.
Report on Desertions contains a different account: Klaus briefly serves the soldiers on kitchen and latrine duties, then dies in an accident. It provides another part of his story beyond the reward you receive at the barrels.
Report: Klaus the Brave, headed “Report: Curious Individual”, is a separate patrol anecdote about his attempted disguise. It is not the same document as either follow-up report.
Ambrus's soldiers are busy transporting barrels of blood. I could make sure they don't reach their destination.
