Choose early skills around what is holding you back
Start with the resource or action you use in every fight, then add abilities you can afford to equip and cast. You share skill points across all three trees, so an upgrade for a form you rarely use delays another purchase.
- Running out of stamina: compare Endless Effort with the cost reductions for your preferred attacks. Practise directional blocks as well: they avoid the stamina cost of Omniblock.
- Reliable Perfect Blocks: build around Perfect Block recovery and Counterattack. These rewards depend on landing the block, so they are less helpful if you mainly hold Omniblock.
- Waiting to cast at the start of combat: Sustained Focus rank 2 starts the fight with one full Activation Charge. Check the planned opener’s cost; one starting charge does not pay for a two-charge spell.
- Night exploration: Shapeshift provides wolf-form travel, while Dimension Reach reduces Planeshift stamina spending. Neither replaces the other’s movement function.
- Daytime Witchcraft: use Astral Communion and Compel Soul as you explore. Their cumulative damage and cooldown benefits reward visiting new sites and souls, not repeatedly using the same location.
Before investing several ranks, compare the manual, Corruption and time requirements in the skill calculator. Choose the next useful rank for your current loadout rather than buying a whole branch because its final effect looks strong.
Three paths shape Coen's combat style
Coen develops through three ability paths: Vampirism, Swordmastery and Witchcraft. They are connected by one shared experience bar and the same pool of skill points, allowing a build to draw from more than one path.
Vampirism
Vampirism is available at night. Its abilities draw on Coen's vampiric nature and connect progression to feeding and corruption.
Swordmastery
Swordmastery works in both day and night. It supports Coen's direct martial options and develops through swordsmanship manuals.
Witchcraft
Witchcraft is available during the day. The official overview describes offensive, defensive and control tools, plus damage-over-time effects and buffs or debuffs.
XP becomes shared skill points
The game awards experience for defeating enemies and stronger creatures, completing quests, discovering hidden places and secrets, and taking part in special encounters and boss fights. When the shared experience bar reaches a new level, Coen gains skill points.
The original character level cap is 50. Reaching level 2 needs 600 XP, and each later level needs 40 more XP than the one before it. For a target level, the requirement is 600 + 40 × (target level − 2). Every level normally awards one skill point; levels divisible by five award two.
| Level reached | XP for that level | Skill points awarded |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 600 | 1 |
| 5 | 720 | 2 |
| 10 | 920 | 2 |
| 20 | 1,320 | 2 |
| 30 | 1,720 | 2 |
| 40 | 2,120 | 2 |
| 49 | 2,480 | 1 |
| 50 | 2,520 | 2 |
Going from level 1 to level 50 takes 76,440 XP across the 49 level-ups and awards 59 skill points from leveling. That skill-point total does not include points obtained from items, quests or other rewards.
How enemy type and level affect combat XP
Defeating enemies adds to the shared XP bar. Combat XP depends on the enemy type and a multiplier for the level difference between Coen and that enemy.
Use the level table above to plan the XP needed for your next level, or compare a longer progression path with the calculator below.
Plan the XP between two levels
Choose Coen’s current and target level, from 1 to 50. The tool adds the published XP requirement for each level-up and the skill points awarded at those levels.
The total is the sum of each level’s requirement. It does not estimate XP from an individual enemy, quest or activity.

What each character level adds to Coen’s base stats
Levelling up does more than award skill points. The game keeps a base stat row for every character level from 1 to 50. Health grows by 82 or 83 points per level, from 220 at level 1 to 4,263 at level 50. Blood per segment grows by 21 per level, the base melee bonus by 2.2, and base ability damage by 11. Stamina stays at 250 at every level, and the base blood reserve stays at 2 segments before skills add more.
| Level | Health | Blood per segment | Base melee damage | Base ability damage | Base vampiric ability damage | Claw damage (min) | Claw damage (max) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 220 | 150 | 0 | 33 | 33 | 37 | 53 |
| 10 | 963 | 339 | 19.8 | 132 | 136 | 127 | 182 |
| 20 | 1,788 | 549 | 41.8 | 242 | 262 | 220 | 316 |
| 30 | 2,613 | 759 | 63.8 | 352 | 401 | 306 | 438 |
| 40 | 3,438 | 969 | 85.8 | 462 | 555 | 385 | 552 |
| 50 | 4,263 | 1,179 | 107.8 | 572 | 724 | 458 | 657 |
These are base values before equipment, skills, difficulty presets and temporary effects. Base vampiric ability damage grows faster than base ability damage in the later levels, so a level 50 vampire ability starts from 724 rather than 572. The base melee bonus is added to a weapon’s own damage; it is not the full hit.
Check Coen’s base stats at a level
Enter a character level from 1 to 50 to read the base health, blood and damage values the game assigns to that level before equipment, skills, difficulty and temporary effects.
Compared with level 19: health +83, base melee +2.2, base ability +11, base vampiric ability +13.
Base melee damage is a per-level bonus added to weapon damage; it is not the whole hit. Read the item level comparison for the weapon side.
Columns shown: health, blood per segment, base melee damage, base ability damage, base vampiric ability damage, claw damage (min), claw damage (max), plus unarmed damage. These base values exclude equipment, skills, difficulty and temporary effects.
Skills need knowledge, points and time
Swordmastery manuals
Soldiers and bandits can leave swordsmanship manuals behind, and swordmasters can sell them. These manuals support Swordmastery progression.
Witchcraft manuals
Magic manuals can be found in ruins and haunted locations or bought from spellcasters. They support access to Witchcraft skills.
Vampiric growth
Vampirism develops through feeding and rising corruption. Skill unlocking and upgrades also require skill points and in-game time.
The Corruption guide lists all 15 level thresholds and explains why an earned level can wait until feeding or combat ends. Five powers also have a blood-related unlock; the boss blood guide matches each named phial to its ability.
For the wider context around Coen's two forms, quest pressure and exploration routes, see the Dawnwalker gameplay systems guide.
Why does a Witchcraft unlock show a vision?
Some passive unlocks in the Witchcraft path play a vision video while the skill is learned. The current game build assigns nine such videos to the Magic path and has playback enabled for passive ability unlocks. The vision is part of the unlock presentation; it is not an extra rank effect or a sign that the skill failed to learn.
The game’s settings include controls for tutorials, map markers, camera behaviour and combat feedback, but do not expose a dedicated toggle for these passive-ability videos.
Recharge Activation Charges and check why an ability is unavailable
Active Abilities and weapon or claw arts use Activation Charges. Charges recover over time, and successful attacks and blocks speed up the recharge. A larger charge capacity gives you room to store more charges; it does not mean that every charge is already full.
Coen starts with one charge. Sustained Focus raises the maximum to two at rank 1, three at rank 3 and four at rank 4. Rank 2 instead starts each combat with one full charge while the maximum remains two.
If a learned ability will not activate
- Check the equipped loadout. Combat abilities must be equipped in the Active Abilities panel. The eight passive abilities below also require an equipped slot.
- Check Coen’s form. Witchcraft is available in human form, Vampirism in vampire form, and Swordmastery in both.
- Check the resource cost. Read how many Activation Charges the ability needs. Witchcraft and Vampirism attacks can also have a health cost; open the specific ability to check its requirements.
- Check the rank and unlock. Obtaining a manual or a blood-related unlock does not automatically purchase every later rank. Compare the learned rank, Corruption and skill-point requirements.
Check a loadout in the build planner, or compare individual ability costs and effects.
Stamina pays for different actions
Ordinary attacks and Omniblock consume stamina. Successful directional blocks cost no stamina, and a Perfect Block restores some. Running out makes Coen Fatigued, slowing his attacks and reducing their effectiveness. Read the block and dodge controls when practising the timing.
Eight passive abilities still need an equipped slot
A passive ability works through its trigger after you equip it in the Active Abilities panel. It still occupies an ability slot. Learning Adrenaline Rush or Scarlet Shield without equipping it will not activate the effect.
- Swordmastery: Adrenaline Rush, Swiftness, Walking Fortress.
- Vampirism: Crimson Rush, Scarlet Shield, Shred.
- Witchcraft: Cycle of Ruin, Unholy Vitality.
These equipped effects have their own conditions, such as landing attacks or making a block. Open an ability’s page to check its trigger and rank effects, then reserve room for it in the build planner.
Master Fencer expands Swordmastery ability slots, while Forbidden Sigils expands Witchcraft slots. Check the relevant skill’s manual and rank requirements before planning a larger loadout.
Can you reset or refund a skill?
The current game build does not expose a reset or refund command in the Shrine character panel. Skill points already spent cannot be treated as temporarily borrowed points, so compare the rank effects, prerequisites and time cost before confirming a purchase.
Each skill tree also limits you to one of its three Ultimate Perks. The Ultimate comparison explains the nine choices, which points count toward the 35-point gates, and when a cooldown reset, damage bonus or survival effect will help your build.
Learning a rank can also advance the campaign clock. Each skill page shows the exact time-segment cost for that rank; some utility ranks cost zero, while advanced ranks can cost one or more segments. The time is part of learning the ability, not a separate combat cooldown.
